Between September, 1991 and March, 1992, producer J.R. Bookwalter (“The Dead Next Door”) embarked on the impossible: Write, shoot, edit, and deliver six shot-on-video (SOV) features in just seven months. With budgets under $2,500 each, the horror, sci-fi, thriller, and comedy movies were commissioned two at a time by executive producer David DeCoteau (“Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama”) for release on his fledgling Cinema Home Video label, sold through a unique startup who shared video store rental profits with the distributor.

Although initially profitable, video store owners and customers ultimately turned their back on camcorder quickies. By the time DeCoteau came calling for a fourth pair of movies — an urban thriller and a western! — Bookwalter had done the same, eventually returning in 1994 with “Ozone,” hailed by fans and critics alike as one of the best SOV movies ever made.

For the first time, the original Tempe shot-on-video “six-pack” has been assembled on Blu-ray in this collectible box set, newly-remastered with bonus features and soundtrack music plus the original unaltered VHS presentations captured from archival Super-VHS edit masters.

Kingdom of the Vampire (1991)

Inspired by ‘60s soap opera “Dark Shadows” and George A. Romero’s underrated thriller “Martin,” producer/director J.R. Bookwalter (“The Dead Next Door”) ushered shot-on-video features into the mainstream with his 1991 horror-drama “Kingdom of the Vampire.” The gloomy tale was far from a financial or critical smash, but paved the way for a tsunami of weird, wild camcorder movies throughout the ‘90s, decades before Hollywood abandoned film for digital cinema.

Jeff works the night shift at a small town liquor store, his only escape from a terrible secret back home. His mother is a vampire who feeds on neighborhood children to quench a centuries-old bloodthirsty rage. When an attractive young woman named Nina takes an interest in Jeff, mother has other plans...

Painstakingly restored from original Super-VHS-C camera masters with a dynamic new 5.1 surround remix, shot-on-video pioneer “Kingdom of the Vampire” sinks its teeth into Blu-ray together with never-before-seen bonus materials from the Tempe vaults, three audio commentaries, and original 1991 home video presentation captured from the archival edit master.

Zombie Cop (1991)

One Hollywood stunt rarely attempted in shot-on-video movies is the car chase, yet “Zombie Cop” spends a big chunk of its short running time attempting just such a feat, with mixed results. Voodoo rituals, fight scenes, questionable police procedure, and ample gunplay with actors using real weapons firing blanks also contribute to making this one of the most gonzo horror/action hybrids ever made.

After a cop named Gill and Haitian voodoo master Doctor Death kill each other during a routine drug bust, the duo rise from the grave to continue their game of cat-and-mouse as members of the undead. Gill enlists the help of human partner Stevens in tracking down Death and putting a stop to his nefarious plans for world domination!

Painstakingly restored from original Super-VHS-C camera masters with a dynamic new 5.1 surround remix, “Zombie Cop” is more arresting than ever on Blu-ray together with never-before-seen bonus materials from the Tempe vaults, three audio commentaries, and original 1991 home video presentation captured from the archival edit master.

Chickboxer (1992)

Saddled with $2,500, a title no one wanted to make, and borderline pornographic footage of B-movie goddess Michelle Bauer (“Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-0-Rama”), producer J.R. Bookwalter (“The Dead Next Door”) rose to the challenge of “Chickboxer,” perhaps the most ill-conceived shot-on-video movie ever made. Despite being the equivalent of a cinematic train wreck, the original 1992 VHS release remains a sought-after item with collectors nearly 30 years later.

A young woman named Kathy yearns to emulate the swift kicks and moves of favorite TV superhero Chickboxer by enrolling in a local Karate school where the teacher is up to dirty dealings in drugs, prostitution, and more. Intent on busting the teachers and cleaning the school of scum, Kathy barrels straight into kicking bad-guy butt!

Featuring additional restoration work performed on the only surviving original Super-VHS edit master, “Chickboxer” kicks and chops its way onto Blu-ray together with newly-created and never-before-seen archival bonus materials from the Tempe vaults, three audio commentaries, and the untouched 1992 home video version as originally presented on VHS.

Maximum Impact (1992)

After making his mark with a series of offbeat gory horror movies, producer J.R. Bookwalter (“The Dead Next Door”) took a rare detour into the revenge subgenre with “Maximum Impact,” a shot-on-video action thriller which never quite has a chance to live up to its ambitious title. Shot in December, 1991 on a shoestring budget of less than $2,500, this misguided effort remains an elusive find for hardcore VHS collectors nearly 30 years after release.

While on business in the city, insurance salesman Jerry Handley rescues a teenage prostitue from a ruthless pimp and his thugs. In retaliation, the gang raids Jerry’s sleepy community, killing whoever stands in the way until an average man has no choice but to unleash his own special brand of vengeance!

Painstakingly restored from original Super-VHS-C camera masters with a dynamic new 5.1 surround remix, camcorder drama “Maximum Impact” barrels onto Blu-ray together with never-before-seen bonus materials from the Tempe vaults, three audio commentaries, and original 1992 home video presentation captured from the archival edit master.

Galaxy of the Dinosaurs (1992)

Shot over three and half days in February, 1992 for under $1,500, “Galaxy of the Dinosaurs” keeps tongue firmly in cheek as producer J.R. Bookwalter (“The Dead Next Door”) brazenly intercuts 35mm stock footage from the 1977 movie “Planet of the Dinosaurs” into this camcorder quickie shot in the woods behind his father’s Mogadore, Ohio house. The results are as outrageous as you might expect, one of several reasons the original VHS release remains a coveted collector’s item nearly three decades later.

Stopping for a brief lunch break on the planet Gurgon (which looks remarkably like Earth), five innocent Zyroxans (who look remarkably like humans) encounter chaos and terror when a race of ferocious dinosaurs become hell-bent on turning their intergalactic field trip into a full-fledged fright fest!

Remastered from original Super-VHS-C camera masters with additional 2020 restoration work, “Galaxy of the Dinosaurs” roars onto Blu-ray together with never-before-seen bonus materials from the Tempe vaults, three audio commentaries, and original 1992 home video presentation captured from the archival edit master.

Humanoids From Atlantis (1992)

Faced with a prolonged bitter Ohio winter in March, 1992 and a distributor release date just weeks away, producer J.R. Bookwalter (“The Dead Next Door”) had no choice but to toss out the majority of his “Humanoids From Atlantis” screenplay and have the cast and crew make it up as they went along. The result is a complete cinematic abomination that has to be seen to be believed, but strangely compelling in a meta kind of way.

Aspiring filmmaker Ken Adams has just received financing for his first professional documentary on the city’s local lake. What he doesn’t know is that the assignment will put him on a collision course with the last survivor from the long-lost aquatic city of Atlantis in an epic tooth-and-fang struggle between man and mutant!

Featuring additional restoration work performed on the only surviving original Super-VHS edit master, “Humanoids From Atlantis” washes ashore onto Blu-ray together with newly-created and never-before-seen archival bonus materials from the Tempe vaults, three audio commentaries, the untouched 1992 home video presentation, and an all-new live reading of the complete uncut screenplay featuring the original cast.
