The same year that producer-director LAURENCE MERRICK made the oddball vampire film Guess What Happened to Count Dracula, he also unleashed Black Angels, a loopy yet cynical biker flick about a white motorcycle gang vs. a black motorcycle gang that’s jam packed with absurdities, semi-authenticities, and even some ass-kickin’ action. (The film also opens with a chase scene so hilariously sped up that it makes the entire world look like it’s spinning in fast motion.)

Jimmy (JAMES YOUNG-El, who led the crazy Macumba ritual in Guess What Happened to Count Dracula) is a new initiate to The Choppers, the all-black biker gang that press materials claim was, in fact, a Teal-life all-black biker gang. (Oddly enough, the title Black Angels doesn’t refer to them or the other group but, perversely, to the two white cops hounding them both!) "This here punk is gonna become president of The Choppers, baby! Right on!" Jimmy tells his girlfriend. And to prove how tough he is, Jimmy decides to attack Chainer (DES ROBERTS, more believable as a sleazy biker here than as the son of Dracula in Guess What Happened ••• ), the leader of the allwhite Satan’s Serpents. Jimmy especially hates Chainer because Chainer is ... well ... too white. "His white is pale! Pale and sick! And I hate all sickness!" After smashing the window of Chainer’s trashy little bedroom while Chainer is making it with a sleazy blonde, the two get into a mad motorcycle race around L.A. that ends with Jimmy falling off a cliff and lying next to his dead bike with his face a gory mess.

But while Jimmy was a jerk, Chainer is a more enlightened lowlife who, we’re happy to report, ain’t no racist: "Any beef we have with The Choppers has to do with territory, not color. This country ... A white man can’t have a decent fight with a black man without everybody saying it’s racial!" Once back at Serpent’s headquarters in a deserted western town, Chainer plays with his pet mountain lion, welcomes a lone biker from Texas named Johnny Reb into the gang, then leads the group on over to Harry’s Beer Bar for some much needed R&R which, of course, includes beating up the bar’s other patrons. But - uh oh - there’s a biker betrayal in the works that quickly escalates into a full scale black & white Biker War in which virtually the entire cast is gleefully wiped out....

Surprisingly, Black Angels is a lot of fun, especially if you enjoy seeing dirty ugly guys fight, drink, and swear at each other. In addition to tons of riding footage (an obvious genre requirement), it also features corrupt cracker cops, a gay biker groupie (!), and plenty of naked black and white biker bitches including one who begs to be gang banged by proclaiming, "...maybe ... slumming, definitely!" It’s a shame Mr. Merrick didn’t make more. In addition to this and Guess What Happened to Count Dracula, he co-produced the documentary Manson before being murdered In 1977.
